Ladybug
Ladybug
Did you know there are over 5,000 different species of ladybugs? In fact, they come in many different colors and patterns. The one I'm most familiar with and most others reading this will also be is the shiny red-bodied, seven-spotted type living here in North America.
Aside from their beauty, they serve an amazing function in our ecosystem as they eat aphids and other pests for our farmers. In fact, the average ladybug will eat up to 5,000 insects during its lifespan. Farmers love ladybugs due to their predatory nature which helps with crop damage and the reduction of the need for pesticides.
Now to the defense of it all. Our type of ladybug is either red or orange and has three spots on each side and one down the middle. I personally find them beautiful but what they are actually trying to convey to anything looking at it is "If you eat me you'll be sorry, I taste horrible." If this isn't enough they will play dead to fool a predator.
If you have made it past the science part good for you!
Did you know that the ladybug symbolizes luck, protection, a religious messenger, heaven, and joy? The reason that ladybugs are cross-culturally superstitious is based on science. Since the ladybug was the natural predator of aphids the full crop ensured good luck for the season. Because of this positive connection, the idea of seeing a ladybug meant good luck.
In Christianity, people see this as a symbol for a few different reasons. The name itself lends to the story of Mary. "Lady" in the name points reference to the Virgin Mary and therefore linked to her protection and intervention. Additionally, the seven spots on the ladybug have often referenced the seven sorrows of Mary.
Something so beautiful in both science and superstition with such easily understood crossover is definitely something that should be symbolized with joy. Their ability with pest control, the Virgin Mary, fun appearance, and all the folklore and superstition should always be a reason for celebration. For me specifically, it is a connection with my mom.
Mom made it abundantly clear to me that she would always be there for me. Guide me, protect me, and give me love. When she passed I had many dreams of a rose with a ladybug on it. It might not seem like much to the average person but she got me a tattoo of a rose when I was 15 years old. Again, not seeming like a lot, but she had a dream of a rose and thought if I had one I would stay safe. A long story for another time.
Every time I see a ladybug I know mom is here doing what she always promised. I miss her beyond words but it comforts me knowing she is always here. To see a ladybug is to know you are in for good days. Luck, protection, and joy. Always believe in hope.
